Sponsor ask kit Testimony leave-behind Sample message
Capitol / district office visit checklist
Use this when you meet a Representative, a Senator, or a legislative assistant in person. The ask is sponsorship of six cheapest-first sections on Iowa Code chapters 664A and 236 — not a repeal, and not advice about any open order or case.
Before you go
- Print leave-behinds. Print the sponsor ask kit and the subcommittee leave-behind. Bring at least one clean copy of each for the member or staffer.
- Find the right people. Start with your own members at the legislator finder. For a Judiciary carrier, use the public roster on /sponsors.
- Know the six-section ask. Non-mootness; written findings before any § 664A.5 order longer than one year; hearing within 14 days on request; pretrial § 664A.3 fixed end at 30 days unless extended; candor with a fee remedy; annual public report by county. Full draft: /bill.
- Do not discuss violating any court order. Do not describe a personal open case in a way that violates an order, a sealing, or a no-contact restriction. An order already signed stays in force until the issuing court changes it. Nothing here is legal advice.
At the Capitol or district office
Official visitor / Capitol tour information (verified November 4, 2026): legis.iowa.gov/resources/tourCapitol. Hours, security, and tour rules change — confirm on that page before you travel. For a district office, use the contact details on the member’s official legislator page.
- What to leave behind. The printed /kit packet and/or /testimony leave-behind, plus the URL foursafeguards.org/bill. Do not leave personal case files or materials that would violate an order.
- Identify as a constituent (name your city or district if you know it). Thank them for their time. Keep the ask to sponsorship — introduce and carry — of the six sections.
After the visit
- Log that you asked. On /opinion, answer the optional “Have you asked an Iowa legislator to sponsor this bill?” radio with Yes (
asked_sponsor). Aggregate yes counts appear on the public tally; nothing is filed with a court. - Follow up in writing when appropriate. Copy the sample from /action into the legislator’s published contact form or your own email. Fill in the brackets. One clear follow-up beats a second visit without a paper trail.
Not legal advice. This checklist publishes research and a proposed bill ask. It is not advice about any order, case, or person. Do not contact a protected person while an order forbids it. Do not discuss violating any court order.
